Ross Carnegie’s Teaching Method –Book One is loaded with all kinds of techniques that will make an amateur sound like a professional. His concepts of teaching chords are one of a kind. He believes the student's left hand has to be educated in order to play these unique, but proven techniques or any for that matter, successfully. He also believes that this is the art of teaching modern music. " In many arrangements that I have encountered, the left hand is written simplistically and with limited imagery or style exhibited. Consequently, if the student plays what is written, the way it is written, in its purist form, they may become disenchanted and lose interest in the very art that they once wanted to learn. Or, in some cases, he or she might hear what appears to be a complex composition played by a professional musician and think to themselves: "I can’t do that" because of the intricacies of that chord progression. This is why I created special formulas for the left hand. To give everyone who want to play the chance to really sound like a pro in the shortest period of time possible.
” One of the greatest gifts God gave Mr. Carnegie is the gift to teach, and he uses it quite well. He spends a major portion of his time planning lessons for his students, using every conceivable method possible to ensure that his students reach their goals. He even makes use of modern technology to coach them and to make sure they don’t miss out on a lesson. He encourages his students to E-mail their questions to him, and makes every effort to answer them immediately. As you can see, Ross Carnegie is truly a dedicated teacher.
Recognizing, that the life of a student can sometimes become hectic, he does whatever is necessary to help them achieve their musical goals. That’s why he uses the U.S. Postal Service, fax and E-mail to reach students with busy schedules who are serious about their lessons and improving their technique.
The Ross Carnegie Teaching Method begins with an analysis of each student's ability and intended goal. Then a diagnostic teaching prescription (DTP) is set up and used for each individual. He (Ross Carnegie) refers to the ladder as a symbol of where the student might be in his or her aim and ability. He clearly states, "All students do not have to start at the bottom and certainly, do not have to start too far up on the top. Rather, each student has his or her own special place to begin.
" After many years of preparation and design, Mr. Carnegie has completed his first music book entitled: The Ross Carnegie Teaching Method Book 1; An Introduction To Modern Harmony, that teaches his famous Signature Runs and Preludes along with a personal, stylized approach to teaching music theory.
Examples from the book:
What is Harmony?
1 Harmony is the combination of notes played in a scale. Example: C D E F G A B C (green represents the notes being played within the C scale.)
2 The study of the structure, progression, and relationship of chords.
*What is Modern Harmony?
Modern Harmony is the advanced level of chord study, where the use of more complex chords and chord progressions (i.e.: runs, etc.) are played.
Example: Modern Special Chord Voicing = Maj7th, 9th 11th Minor 11 and 13th chords.
Ross Carnegie’s book teaches one how to effectively use modern harmony by playing the chords presented in”Book One”, to enhance any arrangement whether it’s a popular, classical or spiritual song. Although, “Book One” covers the keys C, F, and Bb, it can apply to any key. The information contained within these pages is invaluable across the spectrum of music. Mr. Carnegie’s book will help you to create wonderful introductions, endings and turnarounds to compliment every style of music in these keys as well as others.
This book is designed to help the student who has basic knowledge of music theory, and who realizes the necessity for an increased emphasis on technique. Mr. Carnegie gives the student a brisk workout using sophisticated, but not impossible, left-hand fingering exercises, thereby, helping to increase the dexterity of the left hand that is often a weakness for many aspiring pianist, as mentioned earlier. Consequently, as the left hand develops, playing chord progressions and runs will become easier to perform, and he or she will be very pleased with the results -Guaranteed!
Ross Carnegie is already at work creating the 2nd book, which he hopes to bring to press in the coming months.
